Why the Régua Douro Tour Is Different from Every Porto-Departure Option

Every Douro Valley tour listed on travel platforms starts from Porto. This one starts from Régua — the capital of the Port wine region, an hour’s train ride east of Porto. If you’re spending a night or two in the Douro Valley (which more and more travelers do), or if you’re arriving by train and don’t want to backtrack to Porto for a tour, this is the most practical option available.

Starting from Régua also changes what you can do with the day. The boat cruise on this tour is 2.25 hours — the full stretch from Régua to Pinhão along the most scenic corridor of the lower Douro, passing through the Régua dam lock. Most Porto-based tours offer a 1-hour Pinhão cruise. The difference in distance covered — and consequently in landscape experienced — is significant. Tracy from the US, who was staying in Régua: “I was looking for a tour that left from Régua and could only find them leaving from Porto. Then I found this. The tasting at Quinta dos Mattos was really great. They gave us more than advertised and the surprise was a 40-year Tawny Port that was amazing.”

Image

The winery, Coimbra de Mattos (also referred to as Quinta dos Mattos), has been producing wine since 1858. The farmhouse lunch at Quinta da Laceira is described by reviewers as generous, well-located, and genuinely traditional. The train ride back from Pinhão to Régua is a bonus that most Douro tours don’t include — a 25-minute scenic railway segment along the riverbank.

One honest note from the reviews: Francis from Canada had a negative experience with the boat segment feeling unguided and a missed train connection. The operator’s response addresses this directly. It’s worth knowing that the boat and train connections can be tight — the transition from Pinhão dock to train station requires moving efficiently.

What Makes This Tour Worth Starting from Régua

Quinta dos Mattos — wines from 1858. A centuries-old family estate. You taste 5 wines — Douro DOC and Port styles — with the host Helena or a knowledgeable local guide. The experience is intimate and family-run. Tracy mentioned the guide “gave more tastings than advertised” including a 40-year Tawny Port. Julie from the UK: “Host Helena was very informed and such a pleasant person. Wines and port were lovely as were the nibbles, jam and olive oil.”

São Leonardo de Galafura viewpoint. One of the most celebrated viewpoints in the entire Douro Valley — a belvedere with a 180-degree panorama over the river and terraced slopes. A 15-minute stop, but one that photographs exceptionally well.

Farmhouse lunch at Quinta da Laceira. A traditional three-course meal at a farm estate, cooked by the estate owner. Unlimited wine at lunch (listed explicitly in the inclusions). Unlimited water. Vegetarian and gluten-free on request. Rohan from Australia: “Straightforward, delicious food — more than enough. Not rushed at all. Lots of time to chat to fellow tour participants.”

2.25-hour Douro River cruise from Régua to Pinhão. The full lower valley stretch — including the Régua dam lock, which is a hydraulic engineering moment worth seeing. Julie from the UK: “The boat trip was very relaxing, beautiful scenery. Going through the lock was a highlight and a bonus was watching the sea planes collect water from the Douro River.” More river time than any other Douro day tour at this price.

Train from Pinhão back to Régua. 25 minutes on the scenic Douro line along the riverbank — a completely different perspective from the cruise, and a satisfying bookend to the day.

Important Things to Know Before You Book

This tour starts from Régua, not Porto. If you’re coming from Porto, take the train to Régua (scenic journey, about 1 hour from Porto Campanhã). The meeting point is at Cais da Régua (Régua pier).

Boat is seasonal. The full Régua–Pinhão cruise only runs April–October when the dams are open for navigation. November–March, a 1-hour Rabelo cruise at Pinhão is substituted.

Train connection can be tight. At least one reviewer mentioned the transition from Pinhão dock to train station was rushed. Be prepared to move quickly after the boat docks. The train departs Pinhão at 5:15 PM.

Tour group sizes may increase without notice. Confirmed in the operator’s Important Information — you may end up with more than the standard small-group size.

Vegetarian and gluten-free must be requested before the day of booking, not on the day.

Know Before You Go

Comfortable shoes for winery estate and farmhouse terrain. Camera — the viewpoint, the dam lock, and the train return are all photogenic. Charged smartphone for the train (ticket may be checked digitally). A light layer for the cruise. The unlimited wine at lunch is real — pace yourself for the boat afterward.

Not Suitable For

Great for: Travelers staying in the Douro Valley, those arriving by train from Porto, wine lovers who want depth over breadth (5 wines at a single historic estate plus unlimited wine at lunch), anyone who wants the longest river cruise available on any day tour.

  • Wheelchair users.
  • Babies under 1 year.
  • Travelers expecting to start from Porto without independent transport to Régua.
  • Anyone with strict schedule requirements — train connections can be tight at Pinhão.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tracy, United States — May 2025
I was looking for a tour from Régua and could only find them leaving from Porto — then I found this. An intimate tour with only 8 people. The tasting at Quinta dos Mattos was really great. They gave us more than advertised and the surprise was a 40-year Tawny Port that was amazing. The lunch at Quinta da Laceira was also really good — three course meal with two more wines. The 2+ hour boat ride on the Douro from Régua to Pinhão was spectacular. Great value for a full day of these activities.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rohan, Australia — August 2025
Our guide inspires confidence from the moment we met him. First stop — the winery tastings in a lovely setting inside the winery, no rush, great explanations, food quality wines. Felt like a real small family business. Farm lunch was straightforward, delicious, more than enough, not rushed. The Douro river cruise was great. Train trip back scenic. All really worthwhile and the highlight of our trip so far.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Julie, United Kingdom — September 2025
Lovely tour of the winery — host Helena was very informed and such a pleasant person. Wines and port were lovely as were the nibbles, jam and olive oil. Lunch at the farm was excellent, so much to eat and great quality. The boat trip was very relaxing — going through the lock was a highlight, and a bonus was watching seaplanes collect water from the Douro. All in all a fabulous day.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Caroline, United Kingdom — April 2025
Elaina at the Coimbra de Mattos vineyard gave us an informative tour of the winery. We sampled 5 wines which were delicious. The traditional meal was delicious with lovely wines and a stunning view. The boat trip was good and great to experience the Régua Dam. The return by train from Pinhão to Régua also gave lovely views of the Douro Valley. Would highly recommend.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ Francis, Canada — September 2025
The winery visit and the dinner were amazing. However, the boat transition to the Pinhão train station was rushed and we missed the train. We had to wait 2 hours for the next one. When booking a tour, you expect a fully guided experience for all segments. Worth noting for planning.
